henley-in-arden reporting on events in and around henley in arden, warwickshire, england 13th june 2018 456th edition of henley news fortnightly henley pupil injured by high street traffic accident a henley school pupil was injured when he was in collision with a car on the town’s high street on thursday afternoon. emergency services attended the accident at around 3.30pm where the year 8 pupil was knocked down while crossing the road by the co-op store. he suffered injuries to his foot but was back at school on friday among his fellow pupils and attending lessons. henley school head teacher steven jefferies said: “we’re really pleased that the young man who was involved in the incident is back in school already and has not been seriously injured. however, any incident like this serves as a reminder to all school pupils to be careful on their journeys to and from school.” the joint parish council has been campaigning for the last three years to have the parking and traffic regulations in the centre of the town enforced by warwickshire county council but without success. according to wcc there are not sufficient accidents to make this a priority. is it satisfactory that warwickshire county council can disregard its responsibilities? st john's henley-in-arden and st nicholas beaudesert st johns church altar transformed the altar in st johns church has undergone a stunning and colourful transformation following the design, manufacture and fitting of new altar frontals. rector john ganjavi explains "altar frontals convey the seasons in the christian calendar and the altar itself is an important focal point for worshippers during our services and for visitors to our church. the old frontals had been in place for many years and had started to become threadbare so the decision was made by the pcc to commission a complete new set. i came up with a design based on the cycles of the moon and the sun as these cycles govern the dates of all major church festivals. the initial design was developed by specialist firm, church textiles of derby who had already provided us with the panels around the north aisle altar. the pcc made a number of minor alterations until everybody was happy with the design. these designs were introduced to the congregation and the response was very positive with sponsorship coming in very quickly to cover all costs. the colours in the designs are inspired by the church's seasons and the vivid colours that already exist in st. john's. the backdrop to the altar depicts the phases of the moon whilst the altar cloth shows the rising sun. the side panels incorporate flowers and butterflies as signs of life and transformation. there were many months of discussion to make sure we got the designs just right and i am delighted with the end result." rob kingscott reporting the manor of henley-in-arden court leet and court baron court circular published by authority of the high bailiff court leet day, henley in arden, saturday 2nd june 2018 the biggest event in the annual henley in arden court leet calendar took place on saturday 2nd june in and around the guild hall gardens in the centre of the town. it featured re-enactments of many of the old medieval traditions that took place 500 years ago, and also an extensive artisans' market in the jubilee gardens. for the opening ceremony we were joined by visitors warwick and bromsgrove court leets. the opening of the day (the proclamation) took place at the market cross, where les long, town crier, introduced the court leet members and guests. graham smith, high bailiff, then introduced the townspeople to the day’s events. this event was witnessed by around thirty early risers. also present was the new lord of the manor, david lodder. joe hardy had bought the lord of the manor title back in 1992. he passed the title to his daughter robin hardy- freed in 1999. both she and her father had been great supporters of henley court over the past 25 years, but felt the agm in november last year was the right time for a change. robin said she would be stepping down as lord of the manor and passing the title on to david lodder, whose family have had close links with the court leet over many years. david’s great grandfather was in fact steward to the court when john fieldhouse was high bailiff in 1917. david’s appointment was great news for the court leet, as clearly david being local would be able to have a much more "hands on" approach in terms of participation and support of the court leet activities. at court leet day, he was seen preparing and serving burgers! the group then returned to the guild hall gardens where the high bailiff welcomed people to the event and declared the artisan market open for business at 1015am. he also asked for short silence to remember the passing of pat kench who died recently (wife of norman kench past high bailiff) the court leet and dignitaries then started on the series of medieval re-enactments. we proceeded to the foot of the mount where tony capps, affearor, stood in for andrew gardener, hayward, and one other court leet member (alistair price, chamberlain) climbed the mount to view the boundaries of henley. on the return to the foot of the mount the town crier introduced the high bailiff who asked tony in his role as hayward to report on his findings. tony reported that he found the boundaries in good shape so that it was obvious where henley started and finished. he commented that the paths and hedges were clear and well cut, and cows were not encroaching on to henley land. the group then moved to the bridge over the river alne, near the doctor’s surgery for the duck race, which was started at 1100am when henley’s high bailiff and alistair price, chamberlain, emptied 470 ducks into the slow flowing river. the ducks were encouraged to move faster by marc bailey, ale taster, (who was also doubling as brook looker for the day) who occasionally gave the slower ducks a push with his beater. the final distance followed going over the weir, which meant that the previous leaders actually got stuck under the flow of water. along with the dignitaries, around 70 people also watched the race and many young children were seen shouting encouragement (without much effect, it was noted) to their duck. the whole race took 15 minutes, which was slightly faster than 2017. jim dovey, brook looker, was at the finishing line with a suitable net to collect the ducks and to judge the winners. it was won by duck no 57 rose rutherford (daughter in law to john rutherford, past high bailiff – who just happened to buy the tickets! the high bailiff who witnessed the event said there was no suggestion of any collusion) who took away £50 as the first prize. second was no 48, paul marshall who won £25 and third was no 273 andy latham, who won £15. the group then moved to the ice cream parlour in the high street, where sharon jones, butter weigher, checked the weight of the butter on the bread that was being offered to the people of henley. the butter was found "fit for purpose" and the high bailiff then awarded cameron cashmoor, manager, with a certificate which they could display to prove their butter was fit for the people of henley. it was noted that the butter was actually from ireland – kerry gold! at 1145am the group called on mills the butcher to taste a sample of their meat. sarah allcock, mace bearer, doubled as the meat taster, which on this occasion was a sample of pork pie. members of the court were then invited to taste the pies and all passed the “litmus test for good quality”. rob mills, was awarded a certificate of commendation by the high bailiff. it is sad to report that this will be the last meat tasting at mills, as they are closing in august, with rob moving to run the shop in hockley heath. at noon the group moved to the newly opened black swan, where we were welcomed by manager laura speck. henley’s ale taster alan jones tasted timothy taylor’s landord beer and proclaimed it a love
